Dr. Toby O’Geen is a Professor and Soil Resource Specialist in Cooperative Extension at the University of California, Davis. Toby received his B.S. in Soil Science from the California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo. His M.S. and Ph.D. training was also in Soil Science at Washington State University and University of Idaho, respectively. His research program focuses on the application of soil-landscape relationships to address issues related to agricultural productivity, environmental quality, climate change, and natural resource management. His extension program creates interactive apps (https://casoilresource.lawr.ucdavis.edu/soilweb-apps/) as soil survey delivery mechanisms and decision support tools for the public. Some of Dr. O’Geen’s recent research has focused on: a) enhanced rock weathering as a carbon dioxide drawdown strategy in agriculture; b) understanding connectivity between streams and hydrologic flowpaths in soil; c) predictive mapping of deep regolith characteristics in the Sierra Nevada; d) creating interactive decision support tools such as the Agricultural Groundwater Banking Index and the Soil Trafficability Index; e) modeling nitrate leaching potential for agricultural soils in California; and, f) environmental informatics techniques to predict opportunities to maximize the use of green water in agricultural ecosystems across CA. Toby is the UC liaison with the National Cooperative Soil Survey. He received the USDA-NRCS Cooperator Achievement Award in 2012 for his outreach efforts promoting the use of soil survey in land use decision making.
