dr. gordon rees
Dr. Gordon received his B.S. in Environmental Soil Science from Brigham Young University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Soils and Biogeochemistry from UC Davis. He is now an Associate Professor of Soil Science at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA. Dr. Rees’s research focuses on pedology and soil mineralogy, especially in the context of forest and range soils. His experience includes morphological characterization and land use evaluation of soils across California forest and range ecosystems, soil carbon isotope analysis for archaeological applications around ancient Mayan sites in Guatemala, and analysis of soil micromorphology, and evaluating the impact of soil minerals on the availability of potassium for plant uptake. He also researches the impact of diverse educational practices on student experiences and learning in soil science courses. Dr. Rees's teaching includes courses on introductory soils, rocks and minerals, soil morphology, forest and range soils, and soil judging, and he coaches the Cal Poly soil judging team. He is active in the Soil Science Society of America, and has served as chair of the Soil Education and Outreach Division, and as a member of multiple committees focused on soil education from the K-12 through undergraduate levels.
